Google Caffeine: Will Google’s Tweaks Stir Up Your Search Ranking?

via InternetMarketing.com by imc on 11/16/09

Google Caffeine Stirs Up Search ResultsNothing stays the same in search engine marketing.

Every now and the folks at Google put on their overalls and start messing around under the hood. They’ve been at it again recently, and sometime in the next couple of months we can expect the new, supercharged Google Caffeine.

These Google tweaks generally result in changes in search engine rankings. Sometimes significant changes! Will Google Caffeine change your search rankings? They’re giving you the chance to test it out.

You can test out the new Google Caffeine here. And if you’re impatient, you can see the results side by side with the with this Google Comparison Tool.

And here is a basic FAQ page.

Google is looking for feedback, so if you go to this invitation page you can tell them what you think and see what others are saying.

In typical Google fashion, they’re not revealing anything about what they’re actually changing. However here are some of the common observations we’ve gathered from various forums and blogs:

  • Google Caffeine is crawling a lot more pages to get results — including pages that aren’t supposed to be crawled. So it’s returning far more results for each query.
  • Google Caffeine favors fresh content. It seems to be refreshing its content much faster, so, for example, the results for breaking news stories are getting updated in real time. Updating your pages often is going to become a priority.
  • Testers are saying the results are more relevant, with fewer spammy sites at the top.

Try it yourself and see if there’s any difference to your search results… then let us know by posting a comment.

How To Add A Successful Amazon Store To Your Blog

Check out these tips for maximum conversion.

via MakeUseOf.com by Dean Sherwin on 11/8/09

add amazon to blogAs some of you may know, if you regularly read MUO, I’m currently in the process of building a really big blog that’s due to launch in December. Last week I sat down and took out the plan I had made for the site to update it. One such section of the plan was monetizing the blog which I’ll be doing in mid-2010 if all goes to well.

I haven’t quite settled on what service I’ll use as my main advertising platform but I am going to partake in the Amazon Affiliates program to build a store for my blog, filled with products my readers may be interested in. So I’m going to show you how to add a good Amazon eStore to your blog or site.

Firstly, let me set one thing straight. Your readers aren’t going to read a laptop review you did and suddenly make the decision to buy it in your store. It just doesn’t happen. Sorry. So the answer to the question on the tip of your tongue is no, you won’t earn 15% on a $2,000 laptop from your store.

I want you to to sit down with a pen and paper with your blog open in your browser and really ask yourself – what would I buy having read this blog?  If it’s a how-to blog with cool homemade gadgets, maybe you could have a store that sells cheap tools, LEDs, wiring etc. That people will actually buy because they want to build a project on your blog. If you run a gardening blog, rare seeds or weird tools would be good picks. All of this boils down to three rules.

  1. Is it under $10? If not, most people won’t make a split-second decision and buy from YOUR store. They’ll think about it and then buy direct later.
  2. Can they get it around the corner from their home? If they can walk into WalMart and get the item today they won’t buy from you. Try to add items you’d only find on the internet.
  3. Would you buy it? Honestly – ask yourself. Having read a blog post about a product, would you really want that product enough to buy it?

Ensure each and every one of your products answers yes to these questions.

Now join the Amazon Associates program. It will take them a few days to verify your blog is worthy of bearing their brand. If you post more than once a week and the content isn’t questionable then you should get through no problem.

On the affiliates homepage, click ‘Create aStore‘. This will display the page below.

add amazon to blog

Click ‘Add Category‘ to add a new section to your store. For example, I entered ‘Electronics’. Then, click on the ‘Add products’ button seen on the right. This will take you to the page below.

add amazon to blog

Here, simply browse through the products clicking ‘Add‘ next to the products you want in your store. I encourage you to consult the three rules mentioned above while doing this. When you have all the categories and products added, click ‘Continue‘ to bring you onto the design and customization phase.

amazon blogs

In the screenshot above you can see the page where you can customize how your store will look. To the left there is a sidebar where you can change the colours of the different aspects of your store using the dropdown menus or, for the more tech savvy, the colour codes (ex. #FFFFFF for white etc…)

You can also name your store and add a logo. When adding a logo, you’ll be required to enter in an image URL. A good idea is to make this the logo of your blog if you have one. Simply right click on the your blog’s logo and select ‘Copy Image URL‘. Then paste it into the appropriate box on the ‘Customize Store’ page. Then click ‘Continue‘.

The next page is further customization of your store. This is merely placement of the sidebar and selecting which widgets (advertisements) you want to appear in your store alongside your ads. You earn revenue from these as well. When you’re finished click ‘Finish & Get Link‘.

You’re then presented with three options.

amazon blogs

The first is the most basic. You can simply copy the link to your store and place a button on your blog/site. Preferably in the main menu section. When a reader clicks this button they’ll be redirected to your store on Amazon.

The second is to embed your store using an inline frame. An inline frame is kind of like a mini browser within your website. To do this, select that option along the top of the page. Then, copy all of the HTML code that is presented to you and create a new page on your blog. Then copy the HTML into your blogging platform’s HTML editor and your store should appear when you save the HTML.

The third, and perhaps the most desirable, is to fully place your store on your site. However, this is for more experienced users only. The inline frame will work just fine for most blogs and is a lot easier to do. This is similar to embedding the in-line frame, however it will be wider and take up all of the webpage below the header and menu bars.

Here are the steps:

Select the appropriate option at the top of the page. Then:

  1. Create a new frameset page using the code sample provided to you. You can alter the dimensions of this to fit your site better.
  2. Place your site’s navigation in one of the frames and your aStore URL in another frame.
  3. Add a “Store” link to your site’s main navigation and link it to the new frameset you just created.

Your store should now be live on your website.

Before I sign off – a few tips about integrating a new store on a blog:

  • It can be very tempting to make a big announcement to all of your readers and pretty much beg them to buy from you. However, all this will do is turn your great blog into a blog that’s losing readers and annoying people. Nobody likes to be constantly asked to buy things. It’s annoying.
  • Instead, make a short post informing your readers about the new store. Tell them it contains some good products and be honest about the fact that it earns the blog some income. Also, the odd link in a post when it’s relevant and actually helps the reader works wonders.
  • Finally, resist the temptation to add products that don’t follow the three rules above. You won’t make much sales. Think like a reader of your blog!

What revenue streams do you have for your blog?   We have previously covered a few other possibilities such as e-cards and 5 Adsense alternatives.   Which other ones do you prefer?

Checklist of On-Page SEO Strategies

It never hurts to be reminded of the basics!

via InternetMarketing.com by imc on 10/21/09

When was the last time you had a really good look at your website to make sure it your search engine optimization in top shape? It’s probably been a while… That’s why it’s a good idea to set some time aside every few months to make sure your site is still optimized for the search engine spiders.

When you’re readdressing your on-page SEO there are a few things you need to remember:

  • The spiders determine what your site is about by looking for keywords in your text and in the HTML code behind your site.
  • Your keywords need to relate to the content on the page.
  • Spiders automatically follow links between pages, which is why it’s important to get links pointing to your website from other relevant sites. The links from page to page within your site can also help the spiders.
  • Spiders are attracted by new content. Once your site has been indexed, they will return whenever you update or add something new.

To make it easy for you to quickly check your on-page SEO, here’s a handy list you can work through. Tick off what you’ve done and make a note of what needs to be addressed so you can start bringing those spiders back to feast on your content!

  • My website is peppered with keywords and synonyms.
  • My top-performing keywords are in key positions on my web pages, including all of the following:
    • My domain name
    • My title tag HTML code
    • My headlines and subheads, complete with proper <h> tags in their HTML code
    • My web page content — where they’re often bolded or italicized
    • The source code behind my images — both image tags and alt text
    • The anchor text on links to my other pages
    • My description and keyword meta tags
  • I have a well-organized XML sitemap (If you don’t know where to start to build an XML sitemap, try the free generator at: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com.)

Remember, the more traffic you get, the more sales you can make — so taking a little time to update your on-page SEO can mean more than just better search engine rankings :)

Five Reasons People Fail

via InternetMarketing.com by imc on 11/3/09

A Guest Post by Brian Tracy, best-selling author of The Psychology of Achievement. Our new online magazine, StartUp, features an in-depth interview with Brian on how to manage your time and get more done.

People often ask me what the difference is between a success and a failure. For me, the answer is simple. A successful person knows how to set goals and work to achieve them. An unsuccessful person doesn’t.

The payoff for setting goals and making plans is being able to choose the kind of life you want to live. So why do so few people set goals? I think that there are five basic reasons why people don’t set goals — and thereby deprive themselves of the successful life they could be leading:

Reason #1: They’re not serious

Whenever I speak with a man or woman who has achieved something remarkable, I learn that the achievement occurred after that person decided to “get serious.” Until you become completely serious and totally determined about your goals, nothing really happens.

Reason #2: They don’t get the importance of goals

Many people don’t understand the importance of goal-setting. We find that young men and women who begin setting goals very early in life invariably come from families in which the importance of goals is emphasized. The discussion that takes place around your family dinner table is one of the most powerful formative influences in your life.

If your parents didn’t have goals, didn’t talk about goals, didn’t encourage you to set goals, and didn’t talk about people outside the family circle who had goals and were moving toward a higher level of achievement, then you very likely grew up with the idea that goals are not even a part of normal existence. This is the case for most people. And for many years, it was the case for me.

Reason #3: They don’t know how

The third reason people don’t set goals is that they don’t know how to do it. One of the greatest tragedies of our educational system is that you can receive years of education in our schools and never once receive a single hour of instruction on how to set goals.

Yet we find that in certain schools where goal-setting programs have been introduced since first grade, young people become excited about goal-setting — even if the goal is only to increase the scores by 5% or 10% over the course of the semester, or to be on time every day in the course of a month. Children become so excited about achieving goals that by the third or fourth grade, they love to go to school. They get the best grades. They are seldom absent. They are excited about themselves and about their lives.

So encourage your children to set worthwhile and realistic goals from an early age.

Reason #4: Fear of Rejection

The fear of rejection is caused by destructive criticism in early childhood and is manifested, in adulthood, in the fear of criticism by others. Many people hold back from setting worthwhile goals because they have found that every time they do set a goal, somebody steps up and tells them that they can’t achieve it, or that they will lose their money or waste their time.

Because each of us is strongly influenced by the opinions of those around us, one of the first things that you must learn when you begin setting goals is to keep your goals confidential. Don’t tell anyone about them. Often, it’s the fear of criticism that, more than any other single factor, stops you from goal-setting in the first place.

So keep your goals to yourself, with one exception. Share your goals only with others who are committed to achieving goals of their own and who really want you to be successful and achieve your goals as well. Other than that, don’t tell anybody about your goals, so no one is in a position to criticize you, or to discourage you from setting your goals.

Reason #5: Fear of Failure

This is perhaps the most important reason of all… People don’t set goals because they are afraid that they might fail. In fact, the fear of failure is probably the greatest single obstacle to success in adult life.

The primary reason you fear failure is simply this: You probably do not understand the role that failure plays in achievement. The fact is that it is impossible to succeed without failing. If you wish to fulfill your potential, you have to be willing to risk failure over and over and over, because there is no way that you can ever accomplish worthwhile goals until you have fallen on your face so many times that you have eventually learned the lessons that you need for great achievement.

Setting well-defined goals enables you to channel your efforts and focus your energy toward something that’s important to you. Goal-setting gives you a target to aim at and enables you to develop the self-discipline to continue working toward your target, rather than becoming distracted and going off in other directions.

Home Based Affiliate Business Reflections

I was doing some thinking the other day - not something I do all that often if I can possibly avoid it! But my thoughts wandered to the process of starting up a home based affiliate business and then nurturing that business to success. And sometimes when your brain wanders, it makes jumps across the voids from one set of neurons to another and connects two seemingly different sets of ideas.

Basically, my thinking told me that there must be many similarities between starting up a home based computer business and becoming a parent for the first time. Bear with me while I work through this crazy analogy!
  1. Initially, there is the excitement (or perhaps shock for some!) that your life is capable of significant change. Look at all these guys and girls that make a bundle in affiliate marketing commissions! I am quitting my job tomorrow (please do NOT do this - yet!)

  2. Then, there is the stage when reality sets in. You read through all the books, you do the research about what it takes to be a successful parent and raise a healthy and happy child (or a happy and healthy home based affiliate business). And you realise that this is actually going to take WORK! But you also realise that it is going to be worth it in the long run.

  3. Next, you worry. You have done all the preparation. The nursery (or website) is ready. You have all the products you need. Your new baby (or business) is born. And then you worry. You worry through the sleepless nights (waiting for somebody, anybody, to buy an affiliate product from your links). You worry about whether or not any of the things you are doing are the right things to do (forget about first page Google ranking - something tells me I never should have got into this in the first place!)
Let me tell you something here. My number one tip for young players in the home based affiliate business game (or the parenting game, for that matter) is this: Don't Panic! These things take time to develop.

Please do not give up too quickly. You can make a really good income from affiliate marketing - but you cannot do it on autopilot and it will not happen overnight while you are sleeping. Just like parenting, it does take work - not particularly difficult work, but work nonetheless.

The most important thing you can do is get the best training and advice you can. The good news is that some of the best available is online and free! And then you need to persist rather than panic. I read somewhere recently that only one out of about six or seven marketing niches will prove successful. It may be that your first five attempts will not prove fruitful in dollar terms, but they will be invaluable for the learning you will achieve and they will make that sixth attempt so much more worthwhile.

Stay tuned for more information.

And hang in there! It's a heck of a ride, but well worth it!
